My dog is scared of kites! What can I do to reduce her fear?
She usually loves the beach, but today when a kite was flying, she put her tail between her legs and wanted to flee.
she is 8 and was misplaced on a flight once, I wonder if that has anything to do with it?
she loves her tennis ball, it didn't help!

My dog's the same. Try bringing the dogs favorite treats or favorite toy to play with or eat when another kite is flying. You've got to make it a positive experience. Sort of see a kite = get a treat. Try it from a distance at first and slowly (maybe weeks, depending on the response) get closer.

One time after the kite came down, I let my dog hesitantly approach it and smell it. She was a little better after that. They just don't understand what it is and how it got there.

Kite flying is an extreme sport that is usually played during safe windy days. Yes, you heard me right, I said safe windy days. Kite flying is a bit of a dangerous sport since this includes you flying on a kite. You may crash unto unsafe grounds like big rocks, tall trees, buildings, dangerous areas of water bodies, or you may get tangled with power lines. It may cause you harm or worse, death if you just ride and fly your kite without yet looking at the basic steps and precautions to keep you safe. Here are some tips for you to look at before you verge into riding in your kite and flying.

Weather is the first thing you need to check out before you drag your kite outside your home. Check initially the weather forecast on that day and time. See if this weather is best for kite flying and will not just bring you injuries. You may check real-time weather forecast from the internet, television, radio or newspapers.

Do not fly your kite in crowded places. People may be considered an interruption as you fly your kite and you cannot easily land whenever you want.

There is one thing that you should always remember when flying a kite, set a 100-m distance from all kind of obstructions such as buildings, rocks, trees or power lines for may get caught up on those as you fly the kite.

Do not kite offshore, or when the wind is going offshore. For sure, you and kite will really get directed there. Usually when you are tired yet you are offshore, you may swim to the shore. But this may be a dangerous to stop your kite and just swim. There may be sharks, jellyfish and other hazardous marine life under since it is already far away from the shore.

It is best to kite if the wind is going sideshore. Avoid winds which are directly going offshore or onshore. Be alert with weather changes. If you think the wind direction is changing, take off your kite. It might not be good to stay anymore.

Just like any other kind of sports, kite flying also has its appropriate equipments and outfits to use. Always wear your helmets. This can protect your head against any bumping. And most especially wear your helmet when using a board leash.

A knife may save from any tangles. Just in case you get tangled while kiting. You may use this knife to cut and free you from these tangles especially when you are in a dangerous situation.

Kite maintenance tips

  Some tips from Big Air Imports NZ to maintain your precious kiteboarding kite and maintain it's longevity.

Sun and wind: Sun is one of the major causes of kite damage. Don't leave your kite on the beach un-necessarily and dont leave it flapping in the wind as this causes surface fatigue.

Setup on the beach: Pumping on the grass and carrying your kite down to the beach means you may get your kite/lines caught on rubbish bins, twigs and paths. All these things cause un necessary damage to your kite so pump on the beach to avoid this.

Unfold kite: Always unfold your kite before pumping up. Failing to do so will cause twists in your leading edge bladder as you pump and the kite unrolls itself.

Pack away your pump: Take the hose off your pump after each use, this will prevent the hose bending at the attachment point and causing leaks in your pump hose.

Avoid self launching: Try to get someone to launch you every time as self launching causes scraping on your kite which will cause damage.

Waves: If you drop your kite in the waves let it go! Waves are powerful and can rip through a kite easily, especially if there is tension on the lines holding it back. Let it go to avoid it tearing and swim after it!

Lines: Keep your lines knot free as a knot weakens your lines and puts you at risk of a line break. Always wash your bar and lines in fresh water after each use as this prevents the salt water from eroding your lines.

Avoid sand: Sand is the devil for kites, always wipe away excess sand as this causes wear on the kite cloth, eventually leading to the cloth wearing through.

Dry kite always!: Never pack your kite away when it is wet. You dont need to wash a kite off that often but if you do then ensure it is completely dry before it is packed away. Packing away a wet kite can cause mould and colours to run.

Use your kite bag: Especially if you have your kite in your boot with the rest of your gear. Fins, screws and other sharp objects can pierce your kite so use that flash bag to keep your prized kite safe.

The Board

The board used in kite landboarding looks a lot like a regular skateboard deck, but with fat all-terrain wheels that can handle fast speeds on different types of surfaces. In kite landboarding, the kite actually picks the rider up off of the ground using the power of the wind. These wheels and the special bearings of the kite landboard are designed to absorb the impact when the board touches down on the surface again. The board also has bindings similar to snowboard bindings that keep the rider's feet on the board while in the air.

The Kite

The special type of kite used in kite landboarding is long and rectangular and designed to catch the wind and give the rider maximum control over speed and direction. Kites with pre-stretched bridle lines provide optimal performance in higher winds. These kite landboarding kites also come with handles, a kite killer safety device, and a metal ground stake that keeps the kite from flying away when not in use.

How Kite Landboarding Works

The sport of kite landboarding is a lot like kite surfing - only you don't need an ocean or a lake to have fun! All you need is some wind and an open terrain to be off and flying. Unlike skateboarding where the rider is powering the board, the wind and the kite do all of the work. As the wind catches the kite, which is held by the rider using specially designed handles, the board literally takes off. Jumps and hills that give regular skateboard riders the ability to catch only a little bit of air send the kite-powered landboarding rider flying and soaring above the ground for an exhilarating ride.

Boards: Speed Seekers, and Freestyle Boards

As with skateboarding and surfing, the length of the kite landboard you choose will make a difference on the type of actions you can do. Longer boards are great for those who are new to kite landboarding because they offer more control and balance. If you're into fast speeds and long rides, a longer board is best because it offers more stability. Longer boards also tend to be a better fit for taller or heavier riders.

Shorter kite landboards are more agile and allow riders to do lots of tricks and catch serious air. The smaller board provides optimal maneuverability and is extremely responsive to the rider's movements. These smaller boards are usually better for those who have some experience with kite landboarding.

Whether you're a skater looking for a new challenge, or you have a skater or ex-skater in your life that you want to surprise with something cool and unusual, a kite-powered landboard is sure to be an ideal fit. No matter where you are in the world, if you've got open terrain, some wind, and a sense of adventure, you can have a blast with kite landboarding!
