When making a kite, the first thing you'll want to do is to figure out the materials you'll need to make your kite strong and able to fly without to much damage upon landing.

Making a kite is a fun and enjoyable project that the whole family can get involved in. Your basic diamond shape kite is the easiest to make and it consists of two sticks crossed over each other in the shape of a cross. The longest part of your kite should be about 3 feet in length and the cross piece should be about 1 1/2 feet in length or 18 inches. This will give you the diamond shape that will allow your kite to fly its best. Take a piece of wire and attach the two sticks so that they look like a sturdy cross with the shorter stick crossing one foot from the top of the long stick.

Once you have constructed the wooden shape frame of the cross, you'll want to cut small grooves into the end of each stick. Take a strong piece of thin string or twine, or a strong fishing line and run the string around the entire outside edge of the cross and attach the string into the grooves and tie it off at the bottom of the kite. When you are finished attaching the string around your kite, the frame and string will resemble a diamond shape.

Now you are ready to apply the outside material to your kite. You can use any strong and lightweight paper, plastic or material for this. This outer material is sometimes called the kite skin and allows your kite to catch the wind and fly high into the sky. You may want to color or paint a design on your kite, so you'll want to do this before applying the material to the kite.

Be creative with your artwork, it's your kite so your can really express yourself. Cut the material you have chosen so that the material is in the shape of your kite with just a little extra for the over lapping of the edges. Use a good strong glue or tape to attach the material to your kite frame and string. You're almost finished now.

Next you'll want to attach a piece of string across the width of the kite and slightly tighten this piece of string until your kite has a slight bow across the width of it. Be careful not to break the stick however. Attach another piece of string down the length of your kite. Where these two strings meet in the underside of your kite, tie your main string for flight and make sure it is secure.

These strings will allow you to control your kite while it is in flight. Attach a tail made out of 3 feet strip of light material to the bottom end of your kite and you are ready to fly your kite. You'll want as much flight string as you can get so your kite can fly high into the sky.
