How to I get my kite to fly higher than 20-30 ft?
I am a novice at kite flying. I have several beginner kites: a butterfly and a 3-D boat and 3-D airplane. I can get them off the ground easily and I can get them up to about 20 or 30 ft. I keep the line taut and tug a little then release a little line to get it higher. But then they seem to always stall and either nose-dive or float gently down.

What am I doing wrong?

Jet engines built of balsa wood and fueled by liquefied paste or Elmer's glue. I'm sure it can be done!

  1. Scamp

Sounds like a lack of wind.

There are different currents of wind at different altitudes.

The kite may be too heavy for the light wind.

If your able to get the kite higher by running with it, then its probably a lack of wind when your standing around.

One common problem is getting the “angle of attack” right for the type of kite you are flying.
The flying line should be attached to a “bridle” which is tied to the center rib ( of a normal kite) a few inches from the top & bottom & long enough so there is about eight inches of room between the kite & the bridle. The flying line should be tied w/ a slip knot so that you can adjust the angle
If you hang the kite from the flying line you should form approx. an 30-60-90 deg triangle by sliding the flying line
toward the top or bottom but above the center of the kite.
Too close to the top & the kite will have a low angle of attack & wont climb (sounds like your problem)
Too low & angle of attack is high the kite will shoot up but stay close to the ground .
Really low & it wont fly at all.
Some kites have keels w/ a place to tie the flying line w/out a bridle but it will give you an idea of where the flying line should be
Some kites need to have the crossbar bowed w/ a piece of string
A tail will keep the kite vertical & longer is better.
    Have fun
