What is a good kite style, with single line, for a 13 year old boy starting out?
I am purchasing a kite for my 13 year old grandson to fly at the beach. He is inexperienced in kite flying.

These days the parafoil designs are all the rage. They can be easy to fly but in a variable wind they can do funny things.
It all makes for an interesting time and for a 13 year old it'll be a better challenge than a boring old box kite or diamond design.
The twin line ones are good. You can do stunts with them or just fly them straight. They are much more interesting than single line kites for most young guys...and older ones. They can be easier to fly than single line kites because when they get unstable the two lines can be used to get them back into good order but a single line kite doesn't have that kind of control so it falls out of the sky as often as not and then it looks bad when people are watching as well as being frustrating for the flier having to start again.

Later, if he's still interested in kites, he can get or make a big box kite and go for altitude or use it to drop parachutes or launch model gliders from a great height.
Kites are fun. Learning how to fly them can be frustrating at times but it's good training for life.
Don't let the kite get you down....you've heard that one with another word instead of kite, I'm sure.
Here's a bit to get started with.

It can get serious. See the two links on mine here for messengers....sending things up a kite line and having release pins and stuff for dropping fishing lines, parachutes, gliders, ( don't mention flour bombs to him, he'll want a go at it), all technical and fun.

Have fun.

Jonal gave an excellent answer. I’ve been flying dual line kites for several years, and I think this would be just right for a 13-year-old. It will take two people initially, one to retrieve & release the kite, and the youngster would do the flying until it crashes, then start over again. Eventually he will learn how to control it, and then comes the fun with all the maneuvers you could do, and that fun never stops. Once he gets all the basics down, his kite flying can evolve into an art with the kite practically doing ballet in the air, very delicate maneuvers exploding into high-speed power and instantly back into delicacy. I’d say start with a “beetle” at http://www.intothewind.com/shop/Stunt_Kites/Beginner_Stunt_Kites. Good, tough kite that will withstand the initial crashes as he learns. You may want to get him an instructional video if it catches his interest.
